Star ratings are the fastest way to judge a product, and also the easiest to fake. Before you trust a rating, run it through this quick filter.
1. Count the reviews, not just the stars
A 5-star product with 15 reviews tells you nothing — it isn't proven. Look for 4.6 stars or higher with at least 100 reviews. A mature product that's held a high average across hundreds of buyers has earned your trust; a shiny new listing hasn't.
2. Sort by newest first
Products change over time. An old wave of complaints may be about a problem the maker already fixed, or a seller who's since improved. Sort reviews newest-first to see what the product is like now — not what it was two years ago.
3. Read the bad reviews like a detective
Negative reviews are the most useful — if they're real. Competitors sometimes pay for fake bad reviews to sink a rival. So ask: is this complaint specific and real ("the zipper broke in a week")? Or vague and repetitive — the fingerprint of a planted review? Real problems are a reason to skip. Fake-looking negativity isn't.
